According to a recent announcement by the LTO Program Technology Provider Companies (TPCSs) – including HP, IBM and Quantum – the adoption rate of the LTO-6 tape cartridge is much faster than the LTO-5.

The reason for the upturn has much to do with storage managers, content developers, and IT professionals turning to the technology for a safer and more reliable storage solution. Additionally, LTO-6 is much more cost-effective than other options on the market.

Coughlin Associates expects the storage capacity employed by the entertainment industry will increase by more than 500 percent by the year 2018.

“Big Data is affecting every organization, regardless of size,” says Bina Hallman, IBM Vice President of Storage Systems Product Management. “However, its impact is even greater in such industries as healthcare, energy exploration and broadcast productions. The massive data volumes generated, shared and stored in industries like these require even greater reliability, security, and accessibility.”

With LTO at the forefront, IBM and other brands are certain that data can be better protected and archiving made much easier.

According to a recent study by IDC, more than 4.4 million LTO drives have been shipped since the beginning of the program. Also, it was discovered that more than 225 million LTO cartridges have been shipped since the development of the LTO-1. This means that more than 90,000 petabytes of data have been stored using LTO technology historically.

While the LTO-6 continues to grow in popularity, the LTO-5 has also seen a double-digit increase in sales over the prior year.

“LTO technology continues to be, by far, the strongest performer in the tape industry,” said Joel Tax of the Santa Clara Consulting Group. “We anticipate this trend to continue.”

Tax and other experts suggest that one of the main features of both LTO-6 and LTO-5 tape cartridges responsible for their popularity is the Linear Tape File System (LTFS). The system allows for partitioning functionality that makes the sorting, storing, and recall of files quick and easy.
