How relevant is R2/RIOS certification when shredding my tapes?

Being R2 and RIOS certified means Big Data Supply inc. has followed the best practices in the IT and electronics industry, especially regarding the treatment of electronic waste (which is relevant in shredding practices) and secure data management/deletion.

RIOS certification is an ANSI-accredited standard, certifying that a company is compliant with ISO:14001 (environment), ISO:9001 (quality), and OHSAS:18001 (safety).

R2 certification is rewarded only to companies that have achieved high-level responsible recycling standards.

Having your IT assets, including data tapes, disposed of by R2/RIOS-certified companies like Big Data Supply Inc. assures you a secure and consistent level of service anywhere and anytime.

Will shredding or recycling cost me?

In most cases, any associated disposal or recycling fees (including shredding) are negated from the resale value of your IT assets. Recycling fees are evaluated by the weight of the scrap commodity contained in the IT asset, which can vary depending on volume and value.

Can I securely wipe my data without shredding?

Yes.

Many companies opt to shred their used data tapes or perform other methods of physical destruction so they can be 100% sure about the security and integrity of their confidential data.

Doing so effectively eliminates your ability to reuse or sell the storage tape, lowering the ROI of your investment.

However, there are actually reliable methods to ensure the secure deletion of your data without physical destruction.

Here at Big Data Supply Inc., we understand the importance of securely eradicating your sensitive or confidential data. Depending on the device and your requests, we can either securely wipe the storage medium (i.e., storage tape)through state-of-the-art data destruction methods or physically destroy the storage medium via shredding or other methods.

We can perform secure data eradication or shredding at our facility or yours (on-premises) depending on your preferences. Being R2 and Rios certified, we will ensure to eliminate the risk of any of your sensitive information being compromised.

Is my old storage data tape worth anything?

Should you shred your storage tape instead of selling it?

Don't underestimate the value of your used and seemingly obsolete IT assets, including your data tapes. Many of our clients have been surprised at the value they got out of their used equipment, so don't be discouraged from selling your IT assets, even if they may seem too old or even too broken at the moment.

How much value can you get from your old IT equipment?

The answer will depend on several different factors, including but not limited to:

  • Age: the older an IT asset is, the lower its market price will be
  • Condition: an IT equipment in good condition will be priced higher compared to those with functional or cosmetic defects
  • Availability of newer models: most electronics equipment will decrease in price when a direct replacement has been released. If there isn't any direct replacement for the equipment (even if it's fairly old), the price should remain stable.
  • Rarity: very rare IT equipment can go up in price due to scarcity.

Fortunately, checking for the average market price of your used storage tape or tape drive should be fairly easy. You can simply search for similar goods on market price sites like eBay, Amazon, or even Craigslist and check how much others sell this product for.
